LCEC Celebrates 85 Years! – Cape Coral Spotlight

This year, LCEC proudly celebrates 85 years of energizing Southwest Florida and empowering communities since 1940. It all began when orange grove owner George Judd sold the North Fort Myers Mariana Grove power plant to local residents to form an electric cooperative, starting with just 15 miles of power lines and 158 members.

Fast Fact – Cape Coral Spotlight

In 1957, LCEC Manager Homer T. Welch Jr. and Cape Coral Founder; Leonard Rosen agreed to extend electricity eight miles down Del Prado Boulevard. The first resident of Cape Coral, moved in June of 1958 at Cape Coral Parkway and Coronado. “There were 17 lamp posts down Del Prado Boulevard, and I used to patrol them and let LCEC know when a bulb burned out,” said first Cape Coral resident, Kenneth Schwartz.

Today, LCEC serves more than 240,000 customers across six counties in Southwest Florida, with over 8,900 miles of distribution lines delivering efficient and dependable energy.
