Protecting kids from electrical dangers

Kids are fearless, curious and clever making it especially important for them to be educated on being safe around electricity. LCEC reminds parents and kids to:
• Never put fingers or other objects in an outlet
• Never use cords or plugs around water
• Stay clear of substations
• Never fly a kite near power lines
• Never touch transformer boxes
• Never climb a power pole
• Never yank an electrical cord from the wall
• Always ask a grown up for help with things that could be an electrical hazard
• Always look for power lines before climbing trees
• Always keep electrical cords in a tidy manner to avoid trips
It is easy to forget that electricity is all around us. These tips are just a few of the many things that kids should know to stay safe around electricity. For more information on electrical safety, visit lcec.net.

DIY Electrical Safety

The weather is gorgeous making now the perfect time to tackle do-it-yourself projects in and outside your home. No matter the size of the job or the skill level of the doer, it is essential to keep electrical safety at the forefront of any project. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

–Carefully inspect all tools and appliances for damaged cords, plugs or other safety hazards. If damaged, fix or replace the item.
–Always keep ladders at least 10+ feet away from power lines. Even a wooden ladder can prove fatal if it comes in contact with a power line.
–Unplug all tools when not in use.
–Remember that water and electricity do not mix! Use caution when working with electricity in conditions such as wet grass.

A simple project can result in injuries, or worse yet death, if electrical safety is not practiced at all times. For more tips on staying safe around electricity, visit lcec.net.
