Read Your Meter

How to Read Your Meter (pdf)

Reading your meter at regular intervals may help you monitor your electric usage. Electric meters record the amount of electricity in kilowatt hours (kWh). To read your meter, follow the steps below. You'll notice that the numbers do not all run in the same direction. Your meter has five dials. Three of the dial hands turn clockwise, two counterclockwise.

Meter Example
  • Stand directly in front of your meter.
  • Begin your reading, starting with the right dial hand. Write the numbers down from right to left.
  • If the dial hand points between two numbers, write down the lower of the two.
  • When a dial hand appears to be exactly on a number, look back at the dial hand to the right. If the dial hand on that dial has not passed zero, the reading on the dial hand in question is the lower number.
  • Continue to read the other dial hands in the same manner.
